Draft Direct Support Professional Competencies

The RI Direct Support Professionals Competencies Workgroup was formed in January 2022 with the responsibility to identify and develop core occupational competencies to help guide, inform, and prepare the state’s DSP workforce. The workgroup was comprised of representatives from state agencies, service providers, higher education, advocacy, and customers.

After months of review and discussion; the Workgroup is preparing to endorse the DSP Competency Areas as published by the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals in 2016, with minor revisions. The fifteen NADSP competency areas are themselves based on and informed by the Direct Service Worker (DSW) competencies issued by the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) in 2014.

The draft Competencies Document was made available for public comment and review from June 2022 though October 2022. Submitted comments will be shared with the RI Direct Support Professionals Competencies Workgroup for their review and consideration. Please check back for future updates.
